Race Information

The Official Race Guide Book and the Volunteer Guide will have all the information concerning the race, the course (though subject to change, even up until race day), the participants, and so on. Here are just a few more basics. These Guides will be out early 2010.

Runners, Crews, Volunteers & Spectators CANNOT Bring:

Pets and Alcohol. Please do not bring your pets, no matter how much they need to be walked or would enjoy this. Bringing pets and/or alcohol will cause your team to be disqualified. Please tell anyone who might come to cheer for you that these rules apply.

Teams and Volunteers are not allowed to bring children with them while racing or while working your shift. This will be grounds for immediate disqualification.

Safety Gear

Runners and pacers must wear a reflective vest, a flashing bum light, and a headlamp (or carry a flashlight) between the hours of 7 pm – 7am. It's best if the headlamp light pivots. Each team is required to have 2 of each of these safety items (they must be shown at race check-in), although it is best that each vehicle have 2 for a total of 4 per team. A runner will not be allowed to leave the Exchange Zone during these times if they are not wearing the safety gear and the lights are not on. If any runner is found running without these items the runner and their team will be immediately disqualified. We recommend you bring extra batteries. Spectators should also wear reflective gear during these hours.

Here are some samples of the kind of gear we are talking about:

Night Pacers

During night time runs (7 p.m. – 7 a.m.), runners are allowed to run with pacers. Pacers can either run or ride a bike along side the runner. The pacer must also wear all the safety gear and sign a Participant Waiver.

Weather

We have no idea what the weather will actually be, but plan for everything. The average May temperatures for Orem, Utah are:

It's been said that the best weather to run in is 55°F. Let's hope for the best. We plan to run the race no matter the weather!

Race Day Expectations

This is a brief summary of expectations for a Regular Team. It is subject to change.

The Team Captain and first team vehicle would arrive at the start early (we would suggest starting check-in at least an hour before your team's start time). To start check-in, find the Race Official out in the parking lot that is over vehicle inspection. Get your vehicle inspected. This will include getting your vehicle number and placing it in the top of the front window on the passenger side. Once you pass vehicle inspection, take your "vehicle inspection passed" card to your Team Captain.

Team Captain will need the vehicle inspection card, all other required forms (completed and signed), safety gear, and first aid kits to check-in. Once the Team Captain has passed the check-in, they will receive their team packet. It will consist of the race baton, race numbers, race shirts (if not already picked up) and other various items.

After check-in the Team Captain should separate the items that will need to be given to teammates in Vehicle #2. Be sure to place them in an easy to get to spot. The Team Captain should designate a time and place to meet the rest of vehicle #1 teammates. We suggest meeting at a teammate's house ahead of time and carpooling together.

Teams should be around the start line 15 minutes before their scheduled start. They all should be wearing their race numbers. Runner #1 should be at the start line 5 minutes before the start. Runner #1 is required to have their race numbers pinned on and have the wrist baton. All teammates in vehicle #1 must be at the start. They cannot meet their team at their first exchange.

Once the race has started runners #2-4 should go to team vehicle #1 and head straight to Exchange #1. Leg #1 is only 3.5 miles. You should plan enough time to see runner #1 start the race, get to the team vehicle, drive to Exchange #1 and park at Exchange #1. You would be surprised at how long it might take sometimes.

Once at Exchange Zone #1, Runner #2 should be ready to go. When your runner #1 is the next person to come in, runner #2 should be in the Exchange Zone waiting for them. Runner #1 before they get to the Exchange Zone should take the race baton from their wrist, straighten it out, and get ready to slap it on Runner #2. Giving the baton to Runner #2 must be done in the Exchange Zone.

If multiple team runners are coming in at the same time, Runner #2 should line up on either the right or left side of the Exchange Zone. Runners #3 & #4 should yell out to Runner #1 what side Runner #2 is on.

If multiple runners are coming in right after another, Runners #2 should line up in the Exchange Zone in the order their teammates are coming in.

If Runner #1 comes in and Runner #2 is not there, then Runner #1 must stay in the Exchange Zone until Runner #2 comes into the Exchange Zone and then they can exchange the baton. some of the reasons this may happen are Runner #2 is in the bathroom, vehicle #1 misjudged time and distance, or Runner #1 has a wicked kick at the end, arriving sooner than expected!

Once Runner #1 finishes, they or one of their teammates need to make sure they checked in with the Race Official with the list of teams, to let them know your team has passed this Exchange Zone.

Now Runners #1,3,4 head to the vehicle and on to the next Exchange Zone. If the mileage on the leg is longer, you might want to find a safe places to stop, cheer, and offer support (fluids, gels, food), if requested by the runner. Be sure to get to the next Exchange Zone with plenty of time for the next runner to get ready.

This process will continue with all the runners, each running a total of 3 times, until the race is over.

Teammates for Vehicle #2 should carpool or meet up somewhere off the race course. They should get to the first Vehicle Exchange - Exchange #4. They need to arrive early for their vehicle inspection. Their start time will depend on how fast their teammates in vehicle #1 are. A teammate from Vehicle #1 should call Vehicle #2, letting them know of their progress and especially when Runner #4 has started running. Vehicle #1 needs to plan on getting there early so they can give their teammates their race numbers, first aid kit, etc.

While your vehicle is not running, it would be wise to try to eat and sleep. Plan ahead! Get online and see what food establishments are in your area when your vehicle has finished their legs. Be sure to bring a pillow and sleeping bag (no tents are allowed).

When Runner #8 is on the last leg, we expect that the other teammates will cross the finish line together as a team. Runner #8 must be the first to cross the finish line. Once you have finished and taken pictures, etc. the Team Captain will need to officially check-out your team at the official race finish booth, located by the finish line. This will need to be done within 30 minutes of your team finish.
